MPWT provided assistant to military in remote area

MPWT recognized the role played by the military posted at remote locations in maintaining security for all Lao people and undertook to formally express their gratitude for this contribution.  In recognition of their service, MPWT mobilized resources in order to provide the military units posted in remote areas with some every day consumer goods. On 20 February 2013, Mrs. Vilaykham Phosalath, Director of Public Works and Transport Institute and Ministerial Revolution Party Committee Adviser for Mass Organization, and Mr.Chantoula Phanalasy, Director of Inspection Department, and accompanied by staffs from MPWT, traveled to Vientiane and Xiengkhuang province to give these consumer items  to the military personnel posted in these remote areas.

The assistance provided was that of consumer goods such as noodles, canned fish, bottled drinking water and also blankets. The assistance was distributed at three locations: i) Troop 421, Vangvieng district of Vientiane province, and handed over by Mrs. Vilaykham Phosalath with the total cost of goods given amounting to 8,500,000 Lak; ii) Troop 101, Xaisomboun district, Vientiane province, the total value of goods given was 8,300,000 Lak, and; iii) Command Troop, Phaxai district in Xiengkhuang province, where the total value of goods given was 8,900,000 Lak. The grand total value of these consumer goods provided was 25,700,000 Lak.

Wear helmet for safety

 On 29 December 2012, the “Wear helmet for safety” campaign was held at the Victory Monument in Vientiane Capital. The attendees included Mr. Sommad Pholsena, Minister of Ministry of Public Works and Transport; Mr. Saithong Keoduangdy, Vice Governor of Vientiane Capital; Dr. Aleria De Oliveira Cruz, representative of World Health Organization; MPWT‘s guests Directors and Deputy Director of Departments; Secretariat Office; Agency; Institute; Science Assembly; Technical Units; Training Institute; guest from organization in Vientiane Capital such as Director and Deputy Director of Departments, Divisions; the principle of secondary schools; private sector company executives; the principles of driving schools and Head’s Association of public transport.

According to the Ceremony agenda, the National Secretariat committee on Road Safety assembled students from three secondary schools in Vientiane, Sikhotabong and Phiawat at 6.30 am of 29 December 2012. The organizer arranged a students’ motorbike parade from three schools at 7.00 am, to drive along 3 different roads: i) Vientiane Secondary School drove from Victory Monument to 4 junctions of 450 Road; ii) Sikhot Secondary School drove from Victory Monument to Sikhai market; iii) Phiawat Secondary School drove from Victory Monument to the Chinaimo roundabout. Students from Latana Bussiness and Administrative College and staff from Kolao Company joined the drive.

Statistics from the National Secretariat Committee on Road Safety showed that vehicles registered in 2011totaled 1.141.585 cars. If compared with the average annual growth rate in 1996 of 15% and based on numbers available at the time, some 80% of vehicles are motorcycles. The number of accidents in 2011 increased to 4.462 cases with 856 fatalities. During last 15 years, the number of accidents has not been lower than 5,000 cases per year in average, with 550 people dying per year. The number of accident and death seem to be increase together with the increasing number of vehicles, in average about 7 % per year.
